Nourishing a
Cooperative Brooklyn

RiseBoro and the Central Brooklyn Food Coop Celebrates the vibrant culture of food and cooperative practices of the Black Central Brooklyn Community. Live from what is known as Planet Brooklyn, this dynamic event promotes the vision of the Central Brooklyn Food Coop, a Black-owned market and member-owned cooperative, and numerous worker-owned food businesses, while delving into the history of Black-owned cooperatives in Brooklyn, the presence and power of culture, and the belief in the right to quality food, justice, and freedom-within the backdrop of music, art, and community connection.

RiseBoro is redefining New York City for New Yorkers. We do this working hand in hand with our partners, fellow nonprofits, government officials, and the people living in our communities. We want to create a New York City that takes those who just survive and empowers them to thrive. Our homeless will be housed. Seniors will age with dignity and joy. Students of all ages will achieve their full potential. Healthy living will replace healthcare as the path to disease prevention. Diversity will be celebrated and equity demanded. Opportunity and wealth will be fairly distributed. New Yorkers will believe that a better future is inevitable.
The Central Brooklyn Food Coop (CBFC) is a Black-led community project utilizing our collective strength to ensure access to affordable and fresh food for low-moderate income Black people in Central Brooklyn.

Featured Black Cooperatives at Black Food Rising

A 5-member food distribution co-op. BKP sources both dry goods and produce from BIPOC and Queer farmers and producers regionally and distributes the food through their weekly farm subscription program as well as to institutional procurers. They offered NYC and other buyers a vital alternative in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic when buyers scaled procurement for emergency food efforts and their regular procurement channels couldn’t deliver due to supply-chain issues.
A 5-member culinary education co-op offering culinary workshops and courses celebrating the African diasporic traditions of their members.
A 5-member beverage co-op. S3T is family- and worker-owned and offers teas that honor their Caribbean roots
Our Family Tree Coop is a Black-led intergenerational wellness and education cooperative. We see a vision of Black communities bound by love, enriched by wellness, expressing creativity through culture, past and present, and empowered by education. We believe in a future rooted in our cultural heritage and reverence for the land. We aspire for expansive growth—of our people, our land, and our food traditions.
